Silly Weather

The last time Brent and I went camping was 3 years ago... before I became pregnant. Since our last trip we've been constantly talking about when we'd go again and what it would look like.

We decided that the time was right last spring. But it would be one night and somewhere close. Every time we were ready to plan the trip in the spring or summer something would come up. We finally set the date. Thursday, August 27. I'd take a personal day on Friday because the parks require a 2-night minimum on the weekends. Reservations were made. The day off was approved. Camping food was purchased. We bought Oliver a camping chair. Bags were partially packed. We were ready.

Then the rains came all day Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. Muddy camping with a dog and 2-year-old? Camping trip cancelled. Bummer! And because the parks in this area are closed from November through March, we'll probably have to wait until the spring. Blah!

We made the most of my day off though. Last night Oliver had his first smores. The marshmallows were not nearly as delicious in the microwave as over a fire, but he loved it! Today we went hiking at Winton Woods in Cincinnati and played on a huge farm play set. He did better walking during our hike, but still got upset at one point because he wanted us to carry him. Brent is really good about not carrying him, but I tend to be a little softer. I'm getting a little better about it though. His favorite was the rocks, which he'd stop and pick up periodically. He also enjoyed looking at the different colored leaves and learning about moss from Brent. After our morning of playing we had lunch at Alabama Que, a delicious BBQ restaurant in downtown Cincinnati. The owner is from the true south and the BBQ was a delicious reflection of that.

Though we did not get to go camping, we still enjoyed ourselves. It was nice to have some relaxed family time in the middle of what feels like a super-rushed life.
